How Salt Air Affects Vehicle Paint and Metal

What coastal air actually does to a vehicle, and how to counter it.

You do not have to drive on the beach for salt to reach your car. Onshore winds carry airborne salt several miles inland, which is why vehicles in Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach and Ponte Vedra all show similar effects.

Salt itself does not eat paint. What it does is hold moisture against surfaces and accelerate corrosion wherever bare metal is exposed.

Where damage starts

Brake components, suspension hardware, exhaust systems, trailer hitches, wheel weights and any stone chip that has exposed metal. Paint itself is more resistant, but the salt film dulls the finish and holds other contaminants against it.

Glass and trim

Salt haze on the windshield increases glare at night. Chrome and polished aluminum trim can pit over time if salt is left on it.

Countermeasures

Frequent washing is the single most effective response, particularly rinsing lower panels, wheel wells and underbody areas. Protection on paint and wheels makes salt film release much more easily.
